Is acupuncture relevant to women’s problems in monthly cycle?

Human reproductive system is a complicated and one of the most crucial aspects of the human body as it is the one responsible for various factors like urinating, and procreation. Women’s reproductive system, specifically, is much more complicated since it controls the hormones which in turn affect pregnancy and one’s overall health. Menstrual irregularity, cycle delay, menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), and menstrual migraines are just some of the symptoms of an unhealthy reproductive system in women.

There are countless identified and even unidentified causes for such irregularities. Controversies with regard to the relationship of the regularity of menstrual cycle and other factors of women’s health such as infertility and metabolic ailments are a public knowledge, but are not openly talked about. However, the bottom line is that such problems have unbearable symptoms and undesirable repercussions that need to be surpassed.

Where does Acupuncture fit in to all these?

Acupuncture is the process of inserting small and thin needles in certain nerves and muscles in the body which are called acupoints to achieve therapeutic purposes. Its onset commonly treated many forms of pain, from mild to chronic, but has later on started to be used for different illnesses including improving women’s reproductive health. And while some still doubt its advantage on the issue on women’s reproductive health, it should be noted that acupuncture’s help in women’s cycle, for instance, has been backed up by studies.

An abundant number of researches has proven how acupuncture “improved menstrual health and coping for women experiencing delays falling pregnant”. In lined with this are around 120 researches which have proven acupuncture to help with women’s reproductive health. These papers documented how acupuncture alone or acupuncture together with other medical treatments have given a positive outcome in alleviating severe cramps, regulating menstrual cycles, treating menopausal and premenopausal symptoms, hormonal fluctuations, and even for delays in pregnancy. The crucial part as mentioned in the researches is the need for the patients to be properly assessed, as to what condition they are experiencing (irregular cycle/sever cramps/menopausal symptoms, etc.).

Kirsten Welder, one of the participants in one of the abovementioned researches, as quoted:

“I thought the only hope was for a bunch of drugs for me to get regular menstrual cycle, and I did it for quite some time. When I found out about acupuncture, I decided to undergo the treatments, and I couldn’t imagine how it would be if I had not tried it.”
