Goodbye, sleeping problems!

People think that the minimum number of hours delegated to sleeping for adults is at six hours per day. However, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults need at least seven hours of sleep per 24-hour period, and any number of hours below that is already considered short sleep duration. Sleeping for at least seven hours every day is essential for a person’s well being. If an individual always resorts to having less, it may result to health risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and susceptibility to drinking alcohol. The regularity of sleeping less than seven hours is important to take note of as it could also lead to chronic health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, depression, and even cancer.

Causes of Short Sleep Duration

There are countless explanations as to why people have difficulty in sleeping. These are sometimes dependent on the physical state, mental state, or the psychological state of each individual. Someone who has to meet a deadline on the following day, for instance, may have difficulty in sleeping because of being anxious about what he has to accomplish. Technically speaking, however, insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, and parasomnias are the main factors for the difficulty in sleeping. And these conditions are not only prevalent in adults, but are also seen in children. Accordingly, up to 50% of children will experience a sleep problem at any point of their childhood, while about 35% of adults on the other hand have short sleep duration due to the above mentioned factors.

Acupuncture for Better Sleep

It is a common knowledge that acupuncture, aside from its therapeutic effects, also serve as a massage therapy for simple relaxation after a long day at work. In the case of having difficulties in sleeping or staying asleep, research has proven acupuncture to be efficient in improving the sleeping patterns of people, regardless of the causes for such difficulties. Needless to say, if the reason for the difficulty in sleeping is anxiety, acupuncture can help; if the cause is insomnia, acupuncture will help; if the reason is muscle tremors, acupressure will surely help! All these are research-based claims where acupuncture has been proven effective. Instead of taking drugs that may tempt drug dependency, turn into a treatment which does not only help in improved sleeping patterns, but will also contribute to the body’s overall wellness.
